Miscellaneous Information
Harley was born on 30 September 1921 at St. Vincent de Paul, Quebec. His father was born in Mt. Alton, Pennsylvania and was a locomotive engineer for CPR and his mother was born at Lake Megantic, Quebec. Both were American citizens (although Harley was Canadian). They all lived at Brownville. He had four brothers, Robert, Harry, Edward and Douglas and a sister Victoria. Harley went to Brownville Grammar School, 1927-1935 and Brownville Junction High 1936-1940. The sports he was interested in were football, baseball, and basketball and as a hobby he enjoyed minor electrical work. Between 1936 and 1938 he worked as a garage mechanic for Robert Thombs, in Brownville. He spent two weeks carrying out roadworks in Maine. Harley also worked for short spells for C. P. R. Telegraph carrying out section work and on Telegraph Line work between 1938-1940. |
He enlisted on 29 October 1940 and after training embarked for the U.K. from Halifax on 27 May 1943. Arriving at 3PRC on 5 June 1943 he then went on to 5 (0) AFU on 29 June 1943, 23 OTU 3 August 1943, 1659 CU. 19 November 1943 and then 429 Squadron on 30 December 1943. |

Operation | Düsseldorf. 596 aircraft, 29 losses (4.9%). 2150 tones of bombs were dropped, causing considerable damage, mainly to the northern districts. 56 large industrial premises were hit, of which 7 were destroyed. More than 2000 homes were destroyed, 883 people killed and 593 injured, although these figures were compiled before all the missing had been dug out. |
