Operation | Stuttgart. 496 aircraft in the third raid in this series. Night-fighters intercepted the bomber stream over France on the outbound leg and in bright moonlit conditions, leading to 39 Lancasters being shot down (7.9%). |
Reason for Loss | Crashed at 0130hrs at Petitmont, west of Strasbourg, France. Sgts A. Payton, R.G. Prouix, and P.W. Buckley were killed immediately and are interred in a local cemetary at Petitmont. F/O G.J. Wishart was wounded and survived the war in a PoW camp. F/O Fiddick, with the aid of a local priest (Father Rohr) and members of the French underground, evaded capture and eventually returned to Canada. Flying Officers Peabody and Doe were captured by the Germans while walking along a road on 31 July 1944 after being betrayed by a local women. They were sent to Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp where they was executed by hanging on 31 July 1944. Their bodies were cremeted. |
