Miscellaneous Information
Ronald was born on 3 June 1917 at Chaplin, Saskatchewan. His father was born at Chatham, Ontario and was a farmer and his mother was born in Bristol, England. He had six sisters, Nancy, Phyllis, Ida, Flora, Edna and Mavis and also one brother, R/264143 W/O Oliver James Dell, 422 Squadron RCAF. He attended Bolingbroke School S.D. 1925-1927, Esther S.D. No.4706 1927-1930, (public), Esther S.D.4766, 1930-1932, High School. Ronald then did Youth Training in 1940 for Aero Mechanics and a Correspondence Course in 1932 to attain Grade X. The sports he took part in were baseball, softball and hockey and he enjoyed building models. Ronald worked on the farm for his father for seven years between 1933- 1940 (although he spent some time farming with a Mr. Edward Babcock July-November 1937) and finally as a telephone Lineman for three months until enlisting on 11 September 1940. |
After training Ronald was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 14 December 1943. He arrived at 3 PRC on 22 December 1943, then was at 10 (0) AFU. 11 January 1944, 12 OTU 22 February 1944, 31 Base 18 May 1944 and 514 Squadron on 31 July 1944. The following month on 30 August 1944, Ronald sadly lost his life. |
