Reason for Loss | Attacked, supposedly by an He 113 (which never existed) over the target as a result of which it broke away from the formation. It was then attacked by an Me 109, the cannon fire causing severe damage to the aircraft's fuselage and injuring the rear gunner. The pilot was able to return the aircraft to the UK with the injured gunner aboard and landed at Roborough in Devon so he could receive medical attention. Despite this, he died of his wounds in hospital. |
