Miscellaneous Information
The surviving five crew members all became PoW, although d'Avril would not survive long enough to reach his PoW camp. |
D'Avril survived the crash but was murdered in Frankenberg train station as he was being taken to the PoW camp there. The perpetrators were well-known local Nazis who had disguised themselves as civilians and rushed out of hiding to beat him to death while the Wehrmacht escorts stood by. They were never brought to trial. See the book "The Mystery of Frankenberg’s Canadian Airman – an eye-witness to terror bombing and the quest for truth, justice, and reconciliation in Canada and Germany” written by Peter Hessel and published by James Lorimer and Company of Toronto. (Hessel had grown up in Germany during the Hitler era and emigrated to Canada in 1952. He was living in Frankenberg at the time of the murder but knew nothing of it until much later in life). |
Hessel had a memorial plaque placed near to the location of D'Avril's murder. |
