Miscellaneous Information
Alan was born in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, after the family had returned from India where his father, Richard, had been a pioneer in the development of tea plantations . His father was originally involved in sheep farming in the Dumfries area of Scotland. Returning from India, he and his wife had returned to join his brother-in-law on his farm near Ashby. The family then moved to Peebles in the Scottish Borders when Alan was about 6 years old. It was there that he was brought up on a hill farm on the edge of the town and attended the local Primary and Secondary schools. After school he entered the Commercial Bank to take up a career in banking, curtailed by the outbreak of War and his bravery in enlisting in the RAF Volunteer Reserve. |
