Last Operation Information
Start Date | 27-01-1943 |
End Date | 28-01-1943 |
Takeoff Station | Snaith |
Day/Night Raid | Night (64% moon) |
Operation | Dusseldorf. 162 aircraft, 6 losses (3.7%). Oboe equipped Mosquitoes were used to carry out ground marking for the first time (a far more accurate method than parachute sky markers). Furthermore, the target was cloud covered so this raid would otherwise have been the flop that was typical of past raids on the Ruhr valley. In fact the bombing was well concentrated and did much damage to industrial, municipal and residential buildings. |
Reason for Loss | Shot down by a night-fighter and crashed in the grounds of a psychiatric hospital between Boeken and Gemert, Holland |
