Operation | Training- air bomber to take the controls for training purposes |
Reason for Loss | Encountered heavy turbulence at about 1000 hours and went into a spin. The pilot (1332532 Sgt Hughes) gave the order to abandon and the Flight Engineer, Air Bomber and Wireless Operator obliged. Hughes was making his way out when the aircraft came out of the spin and he returned to the controls. He crash-landed the aircraft at the Halesworth US base as he was unable to lower the gear without the FE present. The WOp and A/B had plunged to their deaths since they had not tightened their parachute harnesses. |
