Miscellaneous Information
John was born at Pense, Saskatchewan on 24 March 1921. His father was a Civil Servant born in Corfe, Somerset and his mother was born in Abergavenny, England. John had a sister Sheila Mary, and also four brothers: Thomas Nevill, Eric Alexander, David Ainslie and Richard Oliver. Thomas was a Sergeant in the RCAF and was at 410 Squadron in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England. The schools he attended were Thomson Public 1927-1932, (unnamed) English Grammar School 1932-1935, Secondary, Campion College 1935-1939 (Senior Matric). He also spent three months, evenings, December-February 1939-40, at Balfour Tech. on Wireless Telegraphy. His sport interests were hockey, tennis, track, golf and swimming and his hobby was building model aeroplanes. John was a Stockman and worked for Robert Simpson Ltd. in the Mail Order Dept.1939. He had also worked as a labourer in Pense , during the harvest seasons of 1937, 1938 and 1939. |
He enlisted on 19 June 1940 and after training was sent to the U.K. He arrived on 6 March 1941, was at 19 OTU 10 March 1941, and 405 Squadron 24 June 1941. |
