Miscellaneous Information
William was born on 23 June 1923 at Edam, Saskatchewan. His father, born in England, was a Pool Room owner and died in 1927. His mother was born in Manitoba, re-married Norman Cheal, a factory worker. His sister was married and shown in William's enlistment papers as Mrs E. Beaudoin. He went to Maymont School 1929-1937 (grade 8)and then to Ruddell High school 1937-1941.(grade 12). William’s sport interests were baseball, hockey and boxing. He worked as a tractor driver for E. Schmidt during 1941. |
After enlisting on 17 December 1941 and completing his training, he was posted to the U.K. where he arrived at 3PRC on 5 November 1942. He then continued to 20 OTU 16 November 1942, Driffield on 5 April 1943, 1658 CU 13 April 1943, 51 Sqn 16 May 1943 and 405 Squadron on 8 July 1943. Sadly William was to lose his life on 3 August 1943 at the age of twenty years. |

Operation | Hamburg. 740 aircraft, 30 losses (4.1%). The raid failed due to a large thunderstorm over the target. Many crews turned back of bombed alternative targets. At least four aircraft were Lost due to icing. No PFF marking took place and bombing was scattered as a result. Many nearby towns were bombed, particularly Elmshorn due to a house being struck by lightning and crews spotting the fire through the clouds. |
