Miscellaneous Information
Born 7 September 1919 and educated at New College Preparatory School and St. Edward's School, both in Oxford. |
His father, also an RAF Pilot, was tragicially killed on 5 June 1928 when his aircraft was involved in a mid-air collision while practicing for the Hendon Air Display. |
Remarkably, Alec had 106 completed operational sorties to his credit and was killed on his 107th. |
DFC Citation, London Gazette, 7 April 1942: "This officer has carried out 61 sorties over Germany and enemy occupied territory, against Italian targets and in the Mediterranean. Throughout he has proved himself a most capable captain, whose determination to complete his task, often under difficult conditions, has been exceptional. He has excelled in the training of new crews in whom he has instilled the greatest confidence". DSO Citation, London Gazette, 27 July 1943: "This officer has taken part in a very large number of sorties, involving attacks on targets in Germany, occupied territory, Italy and in the Middle East. He has always pressed home his attacks with vigour, obtaining much success. His excellent and sustained efforts have been worthy of the highest praise". |
Don Bennett described him in the foreword of Alec's biography (Pathfinder Cranswick by Michael Cumming) as "simply a quiet, honest Englishman" and "so simply courageous". |
