Donald was born on 30 October 1912 at Penetanguishene, Ontario, Simcoe County, where his father was born and worked as a farmer. His mother was born in Toronto and died in 1942. He had a sister Helen Isobel, and two brothers Edwin Thomas and Jack Ellison. He also had a half brother George and another, Albert, who had died in 1930. He went to Separate School 1918-1927 (general) and Penetang High School 1927-1931 (4 years General). He had junior Matric. His sporting interests were rugby, hockey and baseball and he enjoyed big game hunting. Donald worked on their family farm until enlisting on 30 July 1942. He had lived in Simcoe County for 30 years. |
After training, Donald embarked from New York on 4 May 1943 for the U.K. and arrived at 3 PRC on 12 May. He then went on to 24 OTU 25 May 1943, 1659 CU. 6 August 1943, 427 Sqn. 4 September 1943 and 405 Squadron on 22 January 1944. Donald sadly lost his life from 405 Squadron on 9 May 1944. |
