Operation | Dortmund. 375 aircraft, 18 Lancasters Lost (4.8%). Most of the bombing fell in the SE districts and mostly in residential areas. 852 houses and 6 buildings were destroyed. 361 were killed, including 22 PoW. |
Reason for Loss | Returned early due to being badly iced up, with holes in the perspex from ice, having jettisoned its bomb load, and made an emergency landing at Woodbridge. Crew ordered to bale out beforehand and pilot subsequently made a safe landing. Body of mid-upper gunner found, his parachute having failed to open, but reason unknown. |
