Reason for Loss | On the return all was well until, over France, the Lancaster was attacked from below by a Me110, and the starboard inner engine caught fire. Mackie dived the aircraft from 16,000ft to 11,000ft but the fighter followed, scoring further hits. Mackie then plunged to 6,000ft in an attempt to extinguish the flames. But even at 2,500ft the fire continued to rage, and Mackie ordered his crew to bale out. Meanwhile he remained aboard, fighting to regain control, until the Lancaster went into a shallow dive. |
