| Reason for Aircraft Loss | After turning for home, hit by cannon fire from a night-fighter at 11000'. One shell exploded in the cockpit, causing a fire. John Chartrand was wounded in the initial attack, which caused an intense fire, and when the order to bail out was given the skipper, P/O John McNary went to his assistance. The aircraft exploded in the air and sadly they were found dead together in close proximity to the aircraft. All of the rest of the crew successfully bailed out before the aircraft exploded in the air. Crashed on a gas works in Ghent, Belgium |
