Robert was born on 29 October 192O at Mason City, Iowa, USA. His father, who was a grocer, was born at Lohrville, Iowa, and was deceased by the time of Robert's enlistment, and his mother was born at Cullom, Illinois. He came from a large family and had five brothers, Maurice , Eugene, Thomas, Donald and William and sisters Mary, Lucille, Gertrude, Arlene, Maureen, and Rita Ann. The schools Robert attended were: Holy Family school, Mason City 1927-1935 (primary) and Holy Family High, 1935-1939. Then Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa 1939-1941 (Liberal Arts and science). He enjoyed playing football, baseball and baseball an his hobby was photography. Robert worked at the First National Bank, Iowa as an elevator operator during the summer months of 1938-1939, and for Erwin Brothers, Ice Co. in the summer of 1940, general work. Then for Mason Brick and Tile as a labourer 1941 to enlisting.(all in Mason City) |
He enlisted on 14 October 1941 and after initial training arrived in the U.K. at 3 PRC on 19 August 1942. Then to 7 AGS 23 September 1942, 22 OTU 19 October 1942 1659 CU 28 October 1942 and finally 405 Squadron on 8 November 1942. Sadly Robert was to lose his life on 17 November 1942, just over a week later. |
