Reason for Loss | Ditched in the North Sea , all of the crew survived the ditching. Several hours after the crash, at about 10am on 8th November, a raging storm developed. The dinghy capsized and Sgt Carpenter and Sgt Chambers were swept away. Their bodies were never found and they are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Of the others, S/L Dickenson and P/O Simpson died from exposure following the storm. Their bodies were retrieved by a German Heinkel 59 seaplane, transferred to Nordeney and buried there. They were later transferred to the War Graves Cemetery at Sage. Sgt Brian Walley, the second pilot, survived his two-day ordeal in the dinghy. He spent the remainder of the war as a PoW- number 90067. His autobiography is entitled "Sole Survivor- A Life on Borrowed Time. ISBN 978-0958034166, Four Gables Press.
