Reason for Loss | One engine failed at 11:30 and then the other failed only minutes later, forcing the pilot to ditch off Cape Espichel, Portugal. A Portuguese fishing vessel rescued the survivors and also took on board Sgt R E Dixon's body (215 Squadron). The surviving four crew members, Sergeant M J Smithson, Warrant Officer J D McLaren, Sergeant H Smith and Sergeant E H Giersch (RAAF) were all interned but released within a matter of days. Sgt Cansick is thought to have gone down with the aircraft and his body was never recovered. |
