Miscellaneous Information
William was born on 18 October 1920 in Great Falls, Montana, USA. His father worked as an Insurance agent and both he and wife Margaret were born in Glasgow, Scotland. Sadly, both parents died within a year of one another (1929 and 1930) when William and his siblings were still quite young. He had brothers Andrew and Hugh and sisters Grace and Margaret. Andrew was in the American army. They were fostered by their uncle and aunt, Alexander (Aleck) and Mary Shaw who lived in Carbon, Alberta. William attended Ardle Bank, S.D School, Carbon 1926-1934 (Public) and then Carbon, Alberta 1934-1938 (Grade 12 Complete). He enjoyed all sports in moderation and his hobby was stamp collecting. Between 1938 - 1941 William worked on his Uncle’s farm until enlisting, which he did on 11 December 1941. |
He embarked from Canada on 26 September 1942 arriving at 3 PRC 10 October 1942, 408 Sqn. 26 October 1942 and 419 Squadron on 13 November 1942. He lost his life approximately two months later. |
