End Date | 27-08-1944 |
Takeoff Station | Downham Market |
Day/Night Raid | Night (50% moon) |
Operation | Kiel. 382 aircraft- 17 Lancasters lost (4.6%). PFF marking was hampered by the use of smoke screens. Despite this, the local report details a very serious raid with concentrated bombing on the centre and surrounding districts. The fires were fanned by strong winds. 134 people were killed and 1002 injured. |
Reason for Loss | Crashed at Struxdorf, Germany where the crew were initially buried before being concentrated to nearby Kiel War Cemetery. This information was confirmed to the son of S/L Lobb by the surviving pilot, Lionel Wheble, in 1994. The crash is also mentioned in a book which is held in Struxdorf church. |
