Miscellaneous Information
John was born on 19 October 1919 at Winnipeg, Manitoba. His father was born at Palmerston, Ontario and was the departmental manager at T. Eaton Co., Ltd. and his mother was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He had brothers James, Donald and Alan and sisters Margaret and Elizabeth. The schools he went to were Laura Secord 1926-35 (General), Gordon Bell, Winnipeg 1935-1937 (Matric), University of Manitoba 1937-1939 (arts and science), Success Business College, Winnipeg 1940-1940 (business course). The sports he was particularly interested in were tennis, swimming and golf. John worked for Mr. J. De Bondy at Manitoba Steel as a laboratory assistant between January and August 1940. |
He enlisted on 13 June 1941 and on 17 September 1942 at Toronto. After initial training, John embarked from Canada on 13 September 1943 arriving in the U.K. at 3PRC on 20 September. He then proceeded through 18 (P) AFU 16 November 1943, 82 OTU 24 February 1944, 61 Base 29 May 1944, and 1666 CU on 16 June 1944. John sadly lost his life on 11 July 1944. |
