Miscellaneous Information
William was born at Gwynne, Alberta on 11 January 1919. His father who was born in Coupeville, Whidbey Island, Washington, died in 1941 and had worked as a Caretaker, and his mother was born in Sweden. He had a sister Evelyn Cecelia and a brother Alvan Harry who was a gunner in the Canadian Army overseas. He attended the Alexandra School between 1925-1933 (General course) followed in 1933-1938 when he obtained grade XII. His sport interests were baseball, hockey, tennis and swimming and he enjoyed making model aircraft. William worked as a delivery boy for three months at the end of 1938 and then worked as an Apprentice butcher between January-September of 1939. From September 1939 until enlistment in 1941, he was a Stencil Cutter. |
After enlisting on 11 August 1941 and undergoing training, he then embarked for the U.K. on 19 July 1942. Arriving at 3PRC on 30 July 1942, he went on to 3 ((0) AFU on 8 August 1942, 23 OTU 25 August 1942, 428 Sqn 10 November 1942 and then 405 Squadron on 11 May 1943. Sadly on 17 August 1943 William was to lose his life. |
