Miscellaneous Information
Herbert was born at Shoal Lake, Manitoba on 19 February 1915. His father, who was deceased by the time of Herbert's enlistment, was born in Bruce County, Ontario and his mother In Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. The school he attended was Shoal Lake, Public, Manitoba 1922–1930 where he reached grade 8, High School Entrance. He was farming in Manitoba 1940-1941 then worked at Kenora Paper Mills as a Bushman, 1941-1942 when the camp closed down. Herbert then farmed with Howard McNulty in Strathclair between March and October 1942 when he enlisted. |
After completing his initial training Herbert embarked from Halifax on 3 May 1944 and arrived in the U.K. at 3PRC on 11 May 1944. He then went to 3(0)AFU, 11 July 1944, 86 OTU 8 August 1944, 27 OTU, 13 Octoer 1944, 61 Base 1 November 1944 and 431 Squadron on 6 February 1945. On 5 March 1945, Herbert sadly lost his life. |

Operation | Chemnitz- continuation of Operation Thunderclap. 760 aircraft. Severe icing conditions over home bases cost 9 aircraft, especially from 426 Sqn. A further 22 aircraft were lost on the operation. The centre and south of the city were badly damaged by fire. Several important factories were destroyed, including the Siegmar tank engine plant. |
