Miscellaneous Information
William was born on 14 August 1918 at Metaline Falls, Washington, USA. His parents were both born in America, his father in Baraga, Michigan (deceased by the time of William's enlistment), was a logger and his mother was born in Empire, Michigan. He went to the General Gordon school In Vancouver, 1925-1831 and then Kitsalino High, Vancouver 1931-1933 ( Completed grade 8). Although no sports are shown he was said to be a sharp shooter and expert marksman. He waorked as a Running Patcher between 1933-1936 for his father (Arbutus Sash & Door) then a Running electrical wireman 1936-1937 at Britannia Mines. He then joined the US Navy, San Diego, as a Marine Fireman 1st class, 1937-1941 but had to leave when discovered he was shown as having dual citizenship (American/Canadian). Between 1941-1942 he was welding and fitting for Boeing Aircraft. |
He enlisted on 10 March 1943. He embarked for the U.K. and arrived at 3 RCAF PRC on 8 April 1944, 22 OTU 3 May 1944, 61 Base 9 August 1944, 1659 CU 20 August 1944 and 424 Squadron 26 September 1944. |
