Reason for Loss | Hit in the rear fuselage over the target by flak, killing the rear gunner instantly, badly injuring the pilot (F/S T G "Jock" Neill), the wireless operator (Sgt R H Causton) and the mid-upper gunner (Sgt B J Levy). The 76 Squadron ORB also mentions that the navigator (Sgt J Penner) was injured by gun shot wounds although his injuries may in fact have been due to shrapnel. Despite his multiple injuries, the pilot was able to make a safe return to Woodbridge, executing a heavy but successful landing with some assistance from the flight engineer, David Elwyn "Dewi" Walters, who sustained a back injury in the landing which would affect his health for years to come and lead to his death at the relatively young age of 53. |
