Miscellaneous Information
An investigation into the cause of the engine failure found an internal coolant leak was to blame but that the pilot should not have made a turn to the direction of the failed engine. |
The surviving second pilot was 975703 Sgt. Brian Hill RAFVR. He was not seriously injured, although he was suffering with severe concussion. He was later killed in Singapore having achieved the rank of P/O. |

Last Operation Information
Start Date | 11-02-1943 |
End Date | 12-02-1943 |
Takeoff Station | Pocklington |
Day/Night Raid | Night (50% moon) |
Operation | Wilhelmshaven. 177 aircraft, 3 Lancasters lost (1.7%). Complete cloud cover in the target area left PFF with no choice but to use sky-marking using H2S. It was, however, very accurate leading to concentrated bombing. Crews reported a huge explosion, visible through the thick cloud that lasted over 10 minutes. Later reports indicated this was in fact the Mariensiel naval ammunition depot. The explosion davastated more than 120 acres of ground with widespread damage to the docks. This was, therefore, the first H2S success with complete cloud cover. |
Reason for Loss | Thirty minutes after taking off the port outer engine failed and was feathered by the crew. The crew made for base but did not jettison the bomb load although the captain was heard by the surviving member of the crew to have instructed this be done. The aircraft lost airspeed and height as it neared Pocklington and while over the village of North Dalton the aircraft was put into a turn to port, into the dead engine, and the aircraft lost further height and crashed near North Dalton at 18.39hrs. All but one of the crew were killed. |
