Operation | Hanover. 360 Lancasters, 18 Lost (5.0%). PFF were unsuccessful in marking the target due to complete cloud cover. This was the last in a series of raids on Hanover and included the 5000th aircraft to be Lost flying with Bomber Command on operational sorties. |
Reason for Loss | Attacked by a night-fighter in the target area, killing Sgt Allen. The pilot was able to return to base with two engines out and most of the control surfaces of the wings shot away. He was awarded a DFC for outstanding airmanship |
