Miscellaneous Information
John was born 8 March 1923 in Biccarton, Ayreshire, Scotland. Both his father, a Warehouseman and his mother were born in Glasgow. He had two brothers, James and Donald and the family lived in Edmonton, Alberta. John went to Oliver School, 1929-1937 ( grade 8, complete) and then to Westmount, 1938-1940 ( Grade 11 Junior Matric). Between 1940-1941 John worked as an office clerk for H.H. Cooper Ltd. a wholesale grocer’s. John enjoyed lots of sports including swimming, golf, tennis, shooting, skiing and jumping. His hobby was model building. |
He enlisted on 24 July 1941 and after training embarked from Canada for the U.K. on 14 December 1942. He arrived at 3PRC on 29 December 1942, 180 Sqn.31 January 1943, 22 OTU 29 May 1943, 1659 CU 1 August 1943 and 434 Squadron on 24 August 1943. |

Operation | Frankfurt. 409 aircraft including three B-17s. 11 losses, including one B-17 (2.5%). This was the last raid where American aircraft were involved. Clear weather led to good marking and extensive destruction to the eastern half of the city and the inland docks. Tragically, an orphanage housed in a former Jewish hospital suffered a direct hit resulting in the death of 90 children, 14 nuns and some other members of staff |
