Miscellaneous Information
Samuel was born at St.Thomas, Elgin County, Ontario on 11 February 1917. His father was born in the USA and his mother in England. He had a brother Donald and a half brother and sister, George and Gladys Hardy. A young brother Arnold died in 1919 at the age of four and a half years. The schools he attended were Balaclava Street School 1922-1930 (General) and St. Thomas Collegiate Institute 1930-1935. (High School Entrance & Jnr. Matric). The sports Samuel was involved in were badminton, softball, golf, basketball and swimming. Samuel worked as a Shop Salesman 1936-1940; then as the Y.M.C.A’s Boy’s secretary for 7 months and afterwards was a Time Keeper at CNR 1940-1942. |
He enlisted on 12 February 1942 and the following year embarked from the U.K. on 28 March 1943. He arrived at 3PRC on 24 April 1943, 5 AOS 9 May 1943, 12 OTU 29 June 1943, 31 Base 30 December 1943. 51 Base 28 March 1944 and 44 Squadron 12 April 1944. |
