His father was a British solicitor. He was educated at Amesbury School in Hindhead, Westminster School class of 1933, Kent School in Kent, Connecticut class of 1932, and Trinity College, Oxford, gaining an M.A. in Law. Whilst at Oxford he was a keen rower and was in the 1938 Oxford boat race winning crew. Melvin was also a member of the Leander Club, the famous rowing club based in Henley, and was a Freemason. |
