Benny was born 30 April 1923 in Quebec. Both parents were born in Bialystok, Russia and his father was a clothing contractor. They married in Poland. They lived in St. Urbain, Montreal, and Benny had three brothers: Sol, Isaac and Alex. The schools Benny attended were Fairmount School, 1929-1936 (7th Grade) Baron Byng High School 1936-1940 (11th Grade). Montreal Tech for three months in 1940, Motor mechanics , and a Correspondence course I.C.S. In 1941 (Diesels engineering and maths). Benny had a St.John’s Ambulance Certificate and a First Aid Life Saving Certificate. His sport interests were swimming, water polo, boxing and wrestling. From December 1940 onwards Benny worked for several aircraft firms. As a fitter for Fairchild’s Aircraft, Montreal 1940-1941. As an Assembler with Noorduyn Aviation 1941-1941, and as a fitter again, with Canadian Association Aircraft, St Hubert 1941-1942. He worked for Fleet Aircraft, London, Ontario as a skilled mechanic on wing repairs and he then worked as a purchasing agent in the Yellin Goldman clothing firm from 1942 onwards to help his father who was sick. |
He enlisted on 24 February 1943 and after initial training embarked from Halifax for the U.K. on 25 May 1944, arriving at 3 PRC on 3 June 1944 followed by 11 Base 5 September 1944 and 101 Squadron on 15 September 1944. He lost hi slife one month afterwards. |
