Miscellaneous Information
Thomas was born on 6 October 1918 in Duluth, Minnesota, USA. His father was an office worker, born in Montreal (naturalised American), and his mother was born in Fargo, North Dakota. Thomas was their fifth child. He attended school at Interlake -Hamilton 1929-1933 (General); Lincoln High School, Seattle 1933-1938 (College Prep and work) and Broadway Evening 1938-1939 (Marine Navigation), night school classes. His outdoor interests were skiing and mountaineering as well as baseball and football. Thomas worked as a mechanic for Libby, McNeil & Libby, a Salmon canning factory at Bristol Bay during the summers between 1937-1940 and as an assembly mechanic for the Boeing Aircraft Company in Seattle/Winnipeg from 1940 until enlistment. |
Enlisting on 19 April 1941, while America was still neutral, and in doing so risked his citizenship, Thomas embarked from Canada for the U.K. on 20 March 1942. After 3 PRC, 29 March 1942, 20 OTU 13 July 1942, he arrived at 12 Squadron on 2 October 1942. He perished just ten days later. |
