Miscellaneous Information
Matthew was born at Winchester, Ontario on 3 April 1918. His father was a farmer, born at Winchester and his mother was born at Morewood, (both Ontario). He had two brothers, Hugh and Morris. Morris was sadly killed in a Mine accident in Timmins in June 1941. He went to Public School S.S.No. 15 between 1924-1932 and then High School, Winchester , 1932-1936 (Jnr. Matric). After leaving school Matthew worked for a while for his father J.G. Wilson in farming in 1936 and then went as a Store Clerk for R.S. Allison 1936-1939, until he was laid off. He was then a Service Station Attendant for Supertech Petroleum Corporation during the latter part of 1939. The sports he took part in were hockey, baseball and rugby and as a hobby was a small arms rifleman. He was a Winchester High School Cadet for three years and had a D.C.R.A medal and a D.M. Medal. |
He enlisted on 20 June 1940 and after initial training embarked from Canada on 28 February 1941 for the U.K. He arrived at 3PRC on 6 March 1941, and was then at 10 OTU 18 March 1941, 1 S.S. 3 April 1941 and 20 OTU 17 May 1941. Sadly Matthew lost his life on 30 July 1941 in a flying accident whilst on a night flying exercise over the sea near Lossiemouth, the Moray Firth, Scotland. |
