Reason for Loss | On a bombing exercise on 10 February. While making ready to land, the starboard engine cut and the Wellington came down at 1944, short of the runway. Sgt Welstead was critically injured and he died the following day, on 11 February, while being tended in Stafford General Hospital. An examination of the failed engine revealed a seized big end bearing. |
