Reason for Loss | Intercepted by a night fighter and exploded, throwing clear F/L Walker, who managed to evade capture for several weeks before falling into the hands of the Gestapo on 9th July, in the area of Tilburg, when he was summarily executed together with fellow evaders F/S Jack Nott, 77 Sqn. and F/O Roy Carter, 83 Sqn. The Dutch lady who granted them refuge, Mrs. Jacoba (Coba) Pulskens (60), was taken to Vught concentration camp and later to Ravensbrück (a concentration camp for women), where she was gassed on 17 March 1945. It is said that she voluntarily took the place of a mother and her children in the hope of saving them. A memorial was erected to her memory in her home town in1947. She had also offered shelter to Jews and members of the resistance movement before being captured. Michael Rotschopf, who shot the three airmen, was tried in Essen following the end of hostilities, found guilty and hanged on 5 September 1947. |
