Miscellaneous Information
Most sources list this aircraft as having callsign SR-X2 but this is incorrect and appears to stem from a damaged capital N hammer on the typewriter used to type the Operations Record Book (AIR 27/803/12), which tended to make it appear as an X. The same document also incorrectly listed this aircraft as LM471 on this, its last sortie. |
Gordon was born at Stratford, Ontario on 14 December 1922. Both parents were born in London, England and his father was a Caretaker. His mother died on 6 May 1944. He had three sisters: Myrtle Helen, Gladys Marjorie and Doris Beryl, who was married. Both schools he attended were in Windsor: Marlborough School between 1929-1937 and Sandwich Collegiate Institute from 1937. Gordon enjoyed playing hockey, football and baseball and his hobby was the radio. No occupation is shown in his enlistment papers but he was a Private between 1938-1939 in the Essex, Scottish, then a Private in the 2nd Essex from July 1940-January 1941. Gordon then enlisted on 15 January 1941 at Windsor. |
After training he was posted to the U.K.and embarked from Canada on 16 July 1942. He arrived in the U.K at 3PRC on 23 July 1942 then continued to 14 (P) AFU. 14 September 1942, 30 OTU 18 January 1944, 11 Base 11 April 1944 and then 101 Squadron on 8 June 1944. Sadly just over one week later, on 17 June, Gordon was to lose his life. |
