Miscellaneous Information
Elmer was born on 26 July 1919 in Ritzville, Washington, USA. His parents were both born in Frank, Russia but were of German extraction. He had five siblings: Alvin, Edward, Victor, Harold and a sister Hilda. He attended Ritzville Grade School where he studied eight years Primary between 1924-1932 and Ritzville High 1932-1936 where he studied a scientific course for his Diploma. He attained High School Entrance and Junior Matric (USA). Elmer also spent six months at Cheney Normal University, Washington. Elmer’s sporting interests were football, baseball and track events and photography was his hobby. He worked as a Chainman between 1936-1937, a truck driver and salesman for Associated Oil Company of California, 1937-1939 and then as an enumerator for the US Census Bureau 1939-1940. |
Elmer enlisted in Vancouver on 9 May 1941 (while America was still neutral, and in doing so risked his citizenship) and after early training embarked for England on 9 February 1942, arriving at 3 PRC on 20 February, followed by 1 AAS 28 March 1942, 7 AGS 16 May 1942 and 22 OTU on 26 May 1942. He was killed two months later. |
