Miscellaneous Information
Stuart was born at Chatham, New Brunswick on 5 September 1920. His father who worked as a labourer (mill worker) and was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia. His mother was born in Napan, New Brunswick. His father died in 1941. He had four sisters, Estella, Doris, Margaret and Jean as well as brothers Vincent, Willis, Jack and Marvin. Marvin was training as a pilot in Montreal and Vincent was an air gunner in England. Brother P/O Vincent Charles William was, a WOp/AG in 218 Squadron, service number J/15829. He was born on 4 January 1918 at Chatham and had enlisted on 28 June 1940. He was married to Cicely Florence (Ellingham) but sadly lost his life on 27 August 1942 Stuart went to Chatham Grammar School in New Brunswick between 1926-1938 where he attained grade 9. He wasn’t a great sport lover but liked to skate and play basketball occasionally. During 1938-1939 he worked part time as a clerk for J.D. Creaghan’s of Chatham and then worked in a Saw Mill for G.P. Burchill at South Nelson, New Brunswick during 1939-1941. |
He enlisted on 1 October 1941 and after training was posted to the U.K. Embarking from Canada on 28 October 1942 he arrived at 3PRC on 6 November 1942 and then went to 16 OTU on 8 December 1942. Sadly Stuart then lost his life on 31 January the following year when the Wellington aircraft he was in, crashed on a training flight. |
