Reason for Loss | Joined as W. A. Bispham in 1940 but went AWOL after failing to gain his wings. Rejoined under A. W. Thompson (his mother's maiden name) and obtained his wings. Taken PoW after the Whitley was shot down and was initially in Stalag Luft III but insulted the Reich and assaulted an NCO so was taken to Dresden where he disobeyed orders and was incarcerated at Graudenz Military Prison. Escaped July 1944 but recaptured and subsequently executed by firing squad for insubordination. |
