Miscellaneous Information
Stephen was born in Brantford, Ontario on 16 December 1914, the son of John Tatai and Helen Tatai (née Sabo), of Brantford. Both parents were born in Hungary and his father was a farmer. He had two brothers Charles and Alex. Charles was L.A.C. Tatai C. RCAF overseas. He also had five sisters, Charlotte, Ethel and another three who were married. Stephen attended both Mount Vernon Public School, Ontario between 1921-1928 and also Burford High. He played softball and liked swimming and having a love of the countryside enjoyed hunting and fishing. Work wise he was working on his father’s farm 1928-1939; as a labourer 1939-1940 for Cockshutt Plow Company then as a Machinist at John Bertram & Son in Dundas 1940-1942. |
After enlistment on 27 July 1942, Stephen embarked from New York on 4 May 1943 for the U.K. After arrival at 3 PRC on 12 May 1943, he went to 26 OTU 18 May 1943, 29 OTU 18 July 1943, 1661 CU 3 October 1943 and 603 Squadron on 8 December 1943. |
