Miscellaneous Information
Torger was born on 22 May 1920 in Milo, Alberta. Torger was only ten years old when his father drowned in Lake McGregor trying to save two boys who had fallen off their raft. His mother Hilda was born in Milton, USA and his father, a well known local farmer, was born in Norway. He had a sister Eleanor Iola and two brothers Verne Atle and Lorne Clifford. Verne was in the Signals Office in Ottawa and R/27858 Sgt. Lorne Taerum, 550 Sqn died 3 February 1945. Torger attended Lake McGregor school 1927- 1937 (Grades I- XI) and Milo High School 1937-1938 (Grade XII). He also studied the Theory of a Wireless and Telegraphy at the Radio College of Canada. The sports he was interested in were baseball and rugby. Torger was working as a labourer for North Western Brass Co. between April-July 1940 when he enlisted on 19 July 1940. |
After training Torger was sent to the U.K. where he arrived at 3 PRC on 4 August 1941, 16 OTU 23 August 1941, 50 Sqn 27 December 1941 and 617 Squadron on 3 April 1943. He then had several postings eventually reposted to 617 on 11 September 1943. Sadly Torger was to lose his life just a few days later on 16 September 1943. |
He had taken part in Operation Chastise- the Dams Raid, for which he was awarded the DFC. He was known to his crew mates as Terry. |
