Miscellaneous Information
Lorne was born on 13 February 1926 in Milo, Alberta. His father was a well respected farmer, who was born in Norway and pre-deceased Lorne. His mother was born in Milton, North Dakota, USA. His father very sadly died after drowning in Lake McGregor trying to rescue two young boys who had fallen off their raft. Lorne had a sister Eleanor Iola and brothers Verne Atle and J/16688 F/Lt. Torger Harold RCAF. Verne was in the Signals Office in Ottawa. Torger was also on the strength of Bomber Command and had taken part in Operation Chastise (Dambusters raid) for which he had been awarded the DFC. He was sadly also to lose his life on 16 September 1943. The schools Lorne attended were Milo Alberta and Calgary 1930-1940, (Grade 8) and Western Canada High School (Grade 10+). Rugby and baseball were the sports in which Lorne participated. Between July and September 1943 Lorne worked as a truck driver with Jenkins Ltd. of Alberta, Calgary. On 15 October 1943, Lorne enlisted. |
He embarked from Halifax on 16 June 1944 after his initial training and arrived in the U.K. at 3 PRC on 25 June 1944. Lorne then went through 28 OTU 18 July 1944, 30 OTU 22 July 1944 and 550 Squadron on 19 December 1944. |
