Miscellaneous Information
Sgt Sumner joined 576 Sqn in Dec 43 and flew one operation on 5 January 1944 with the H. M. C. Thomas crew. On 10 February 1944 he was posted to 550 Sqn, North Killingholme from 1662 HCU, Blyton. Then posted 22 February 1944 to 11 Base for re-crewing as member of a ‘headless crew’ following the loss of their pilot F/Sgt. J P Harrison, who was killed on his 2nd Dickie flight. They were reposted to 550 Sqn with their new pilot, J. F. Craig. On his first op on 15 March 1944 Kenneth was lost in LL852 BQ-X to Stuttgart, which crashed near Appenwihr (Haut-Rhin), around 8 km SE from the centre of Colmar, France. It was shot down by Major Rolf Leuchs of Stab II./NJG6. Six crew killed, one became a prisoner of war. Kenneth was 22 and the son of William Joseph and Trixie Violet Sumner (née Williams) of Catford, London. In the 1939 Register he was living with his family at 114 Glenfarg Road, Hither Green, London and working as a clerk in mining shares. The wedding photograph shows his marriage to Constance Grace Sheen in Apr 43. Constance remarried in 1946 and had two daughters. She passed away in 1997. |
