Miscellaneous Information
Carl was born on 26 June 1918 at Cutler, Ontario. Both parents were born in Finland (British nationals) and his father was a Saw Mill worker. He had brothers Harold, Arthur, Einer and Leonard . A fifth sibling Ina, died in 1930. He attended Blind River Public School, Ontario, 1925-1931 (grade 8). His sport interests were skiing, hockey and baseball. Between 1931-1936 Carl worked at home (Blind River) farming and then at Crane Lumber Co.,Thessalon, 1936-1939, as an Edgerman and finally 1939-1942 as a miner and carpenter’s helper at the International Nickel Company. |
Carl enlisted on 9 October 1942 and after training was posted to the U.K. He embarked from Halifax on 26 August 1943 and arrived at 3PRC on 2 September 1943. He then went to 29 OTU on 21 September 1943, 1654 CU 10 November 1943, 51 Base 25 November 1943 and 57 Squadron on 18 February 1944. Sadly Carl lost his life on 24 March 1944. |
