| Reason for Aircraft Loss | Homebound with its Tallboy still in the bomb bay, the Lancaster was attacked by a night fighter flown by Hptm. Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer, losing three engines and catching fire. It was abandoned and most of the crew got out in time before the aircraft crashed near Lochem, Holland. Flight Lieutenant Stout remained at the controls, keeping the aircraft stable so his crew could escape but was himself killed in the crash. |
