Op de 24 December 1944 (kerstavond) werd de Lancaster Mk III van het Australische 460 Sqn (Bomber Command), PB255, AR-E2, gevlogen door piloot F/O M.C.Skarratt uitgezonden voor en bombardements missie op het Duitse spoorweg knooppunt Nippes bij Keulen. Het toestel werd al op de heenweg aangevallen door Duitse (Nacht) jagers en zwaar beschadigd waardoor de piloot besloot om terug te keren naar zijn basis in Engeland. Reeds aangekomen boven Oostelbeers spatte de Lancaster uiteen doordat de bomlading explodeerde. Hierbij kwamen zes jonge australiers en één Engelsman om het leven.
Translation "On December 24, 1944 (Christmas Eve) Lancaster Mk III PB255 AR-E2 of 460 (RAAF) Sqn, Bomber Command, flown by pilot F/O M.C. Skarratt was sent for a bombing mission on the German railway junction Nippes near Cologne. The aircraft was attacked by German Nightfighters on the way there and was severely damaged, causing the Pilot to decide to return to his base in England. Having already arrived above Oostelbeers, the Lancaster exploded because the bomb load exploded. Six young Australians and one Englishman were killed." |
