Miscellaneous Information
John was born on 20 March 1923 at Toronto, Ontario. His father was a Real Estate Agent born in Grey County and his mother was born in Toronto. He had brothers Leo, James, Charles and Douglas and sisters Sylvia, Frances, Dorothy and Shirley. Another sister, Margaret, had died in 1926. He attended Keele Street and Annette Street schools between 1928-1936 (general course) followed by Humberside Collegiate Institute 1936-1941 (Jnr.and Snr. Matric). John’s sport interests were rugby, swimming, softball and hockey and he was interested in model aircraft. As he was still a student he wasn’t able to look for full time employment but did help in the Stockroom of Loblaw Groceterias on Saturdays during 1940 -1941. |
On 8 November 1941 John enlisted and after training was posted to the U.K. He arrived on 4 November 1942 and after 3PRC went to 10 (0) AFU 1 March 1943, 30 OTU 13 April 1943, 1662 CU. 1 July 1943, 100 Sqn 7 August 1943 and 550 Squadron on 25 November 1943. Sadly, at the age of twenty years, John was to lose his life on 23 December 1943 |
