Miscellaneous Information
Jack Squire was born on 17 September 1925 and was one of 13 children - 9 brothers and 4 sisters. They lived in Hammersmith, West London during the war. On the night he was killed he was serving as a 'spare bod' rear gunner, his regular crew having completed their tours before him. |
Two crew survived the collision, Flt. Lt. Harrison who was the pilot and was thrown clear with his parachute attached, and Sgt Robert Whiteford the wireless operator who was a substitute, covering for a sick crewman. He managed to pull on a loose parachute as the Lancaster was falling and jump out through a hole in the fuselage. They both parachuted safely to earth and were picked up by the American army and repatriated. They both survived the rest of the war. |
