Miscellaneous Information
| Born 8 January 1917 in Gisborne, New Zealand. Educated at Rongotai College. Also attended night classes in Commercial Art at Wellington Technical College. Spent three years in the NZ Volunteer Reserve as a signalman. He was employed as a clerk by Billiards Limited, manufacturing retailers, of Wellington, at the time of applying for war service on 26 October 1939. Enlisted on 19 January 1941 as an Observer and underwent training in Canada under the Empire Training Scheme, beginning 26 May 1941. He passed through No. 7 Air Observers' School, Portage la Prairie, and then to No. 5 Bombing and Gunnery School in Defoe. He graduated as Air Observer on 25 October 1941. Promoted to P/O on 24 November 1941 and F/O on 1 October 1942. He embarked for England on 13 December 1942, where he underwent further training at No. 2 Advanced Flying Unit, Brize Norton, followed by No. 11 OTU, Bassingbourn where he crewed up and was transferred to No. 9 Squadron, Waddington. |
