In de nacht van 12 op 13 september 1942 was Bremen het doel van meer dan 400 Britse bommenwerpers. Op de terugweg naar de thuisbasis werd Vickers Wellington X9786, een tweemotorige bommenwerper, van 26 Operational Training Unit om 05.45 uur op vier kilometer hoogte onderschept door een Duitse nachtjager.
